Split the bottom

Yesterday I was having English lesson with my Upper Secondary darlings.
We were reading a passage about a group of men trying to survive in a desert and there was a part of it that talked about snake-hunting and it went like this:

" 'Don't be too sure," Kolemenos answered. 'There's hardly anything a starving man can't eat. Any tree in the creek will provide a stick. Split the bottom and you will have an implement for pinning a snake to the ground.' "

I asked the boys what 'bottom' refers to in this case.

Aaron said with sincerity, "That snake's bottom ah?"

My jaw dropped through the floor and the floor of the next twelve storeys, all the way to the void deck of the block, I think.

He said with more sincerity, having sensed my inability to comprehend what he had just said, "ERR, the snake's ass lah."

'Nuff said.

I have the cutest student on Earth in MY class.
